FLANC 2022 Keynote Speakers

Dr. Margaret Peterson

Dr. Margaret Peterson is the Executive Director of the California World Language Project (CWLP) in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. CWLP is dedicated to developing the linguistic, intercultural, and global competency skills in each and every student in order to create a more inclusive society based on mutual respect, empathy, and a commitment to equity. An educator for 30 years, she has served her community as a teacher of Japanese, curriculum developer, site and central office administrator, and director of professional learning. Her areas of interest and research include social justice, social-emotional wellbeing of students and teacher leaders, global citizenship, seal of biliteracy, dual language immersion, and professional development career pathways for language teachers.

Dr. Stacey M. Johnson

Dr. Stacey Margarita Johnson is Assistant Director at the Center for Teaching, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and Affiliated Faculty in the Center for Second Language Studies at Vanderbilt University. She is also editor of the journal Spanish and Portuguese Review, and producer and host of the podcast “We Teach Languages.” She has published books and articles on topics related to postsecondary language classroom practices, hybrid/blended instruction, and adult learning including transformative learning and critical pedagogy. Dr. Johnson served as the founding Chair of ACTFL's Critical & Social Justice Approaches Special Interest Groups (SIG).

Dr. Alice "Ali" Miano

Dr. Alice "Ali" Miano is Coordinator of the Spanish Language Program at Stanford University, where she teaches Spanish at all levels from a social justice standpoint. She is the Past Chair of ACTFL's Critical & Social Justice Approaches SIG and President-Elect of the California Language Teachers Association. She has published articles on community-engaged language learning and worked alongside students at the border in Tijuana with Al Otro Lado and in Texas with the Dilley Pro Bono Project. Locally, Dr. Miano and her students have collaborated with the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula as well as the Mountain View Dayworker Center.
